Above Yet Beneath
A series of mixed media rubbings on paper with cutouts.
Large wall collages, which I call “texture matrices,” are foundational to my current practice. I build the texture matrix from paper, tape, and other recycled materials, then make multiple rubbings from the matrix.
In Above Yet Beneath, the matrix-based rubbings are created on multi-media paper using wax pastel over acrylic washes or watercolor crayon. After the design is completed with watercolor and colored pencil, patterns are cut out of the paper. In some cases the matrix-based rubbing is layered over a second rubbing made from a different texture so that the bottom layer is visible through cutouts in the top layer. In other cases, there is only one layer and the cutouts reveal light reflected from the wall behind.
These pieces are presented using a hanging system of thin wooden bars and aluminum cleats. They range in size from approximately 20 x 13 in. to 68 x 42 in.
